Program Description
A one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship in Transfusion Medicine
is available at Stony
Brook University Hospital, an academic medical center located
in a pleasant Long Island Community approximately 60 miles east of
New York City. The fellow is involved in all aspects of the Blood
Bank, Donor Room, and Apheresis services. The fellow provides clinical
consultative services as they relate to blood transfusion therapy,
serving as an important coordinator between the Blood Bank and the
other clinical departments. An active Donor Room collects red cells
(homologous & autologous red cells) and platelets by apheresis.
The Apheresis service provides therapeutic hemapheresis to both inpatients
and outpatients, and collects stem cells for the oncology service.
Teaching experience is gained through instructing clinical pathology
residents and clinical hematology fellows who rotate through the Transfusion
Service. Additional experience and exposure to a large blood center
is obtained during a one-month rotation at the New York Blood Center. Ample research
opportunities are available that are relevant to Transfusion Medicine.
These include smaller clinical or applied “bench” research projects.
